Whats with Acers "update" outside the App Store?

I received a Leap Active for Christmas (2016) and after about a month it began telling me I needed to update to the "new app version". So I went looking here on the App Store for reviews of the new version before I updated....but it doesnt seem to be here. Im ALWAYS suspicious of iPhone apps that dont want you to update through the App Store. So whats the deal with this non-app-store "update"?
